How To Complete the Work History Report

Adams & Associates » How To Complete the Work History Report

This is an informational video for clients who are applying for Social Security Disability or SSI.  Completing forms for Social Security is important.  They look at the forms that you complete throughout the process.  Last month we talked about the adult function report.  If you have not had the opportunity to see that video please go back on the YouTube channel or on my website and view it.

Social Security is for people who cannot work.  The 1st step in determining that is determining if you could return to your past work.  The recent law changes have helped eliminate past work significantly.  Now SSA only considers the last 5 years of work.  But it’s important how you report that work.  Watch my video to get some insights.

The work history report, also known as form 3369, will inquire about the employment you have undertaken in the past. The first question it poses is “What is your job title?” It is essential to be thorough, including all titles associated with your duties. For instance, if you worked as a Motel Front Desk Clerk while also cleaning rooms and doing laundry, your job title should be “front desk clerk/hotel cleaner/laundry worker.” This specification clarifies the nature of your responsibilities, aiding Social Security in understanding your actual tasks. If you performed two distinct jobs concurrently, it is referred to as a “composite job.” Social Security rulings prohibit adjudicators from concluding that you could return to the easiest aspect of the job if your previous work is considered a “composite job,” which can be advantageous for your case.

The remainder of the form seeks information regarding the specific physical demands of your work. It is crucial to provide accurate details, including the heaviest items you had to lift or carry, even on an occasional basis. The same applies to walking, standing, sitting, stooping, handling objects, and reaching. Although no one performs the same activities every day, it is important for Social Security to understand the various aspects of the job you were required to perform, even if only occasionally.

The final section of the work history report asks whether you were a “supervisor.” It is important not to confuse being a supervisor with being a lead worker. Many individuals are lead workers, guiding others on what to do and how to do it, but they are not supervisors. Supervisors are involved in hiring, firing, scheduling, handling personnel matters, and conducting performance reviews. Unless you engaged in these activities, you were a lead worker.

If your claim is currently being processed, do not be concerned about this report. We can address it later if I determine that it will be a significant factor in your case.

Because of Issues with Social Security, we are experiencing significant delays in the processing of claims.    There is a backlog of claims that have been delayed at the initial application and reconsideration levels.  Please don’t get discouraged.  We are doing all we can to help Social Security process claims more quickly.
